USS Kelvin |

This is the Starcraft's USS KELVIN model kit. It's a nice kit with sharp attention to detail. Judging from the pictures I've seen, detail seems to be right on! The casting was great on this kit; only a few pin holes needed filling. The model was done in subassemblies for ease of decal application. After filling and sanding the pin holes with putty and sanded, the kit was primed using a gray auto primer. Then a base coat of aggressor gray was used, two parts flat white to one part aggressor gray. Hull plating was applied with the decal hull skin sold separately. Microscale liquid decal film was applied to the hull plating decals to ensure the decals would not chip or rip apart during application. After glossing the surface, the fun began! The hull decals did lay down nice. The fun part is going back and poking the bubbles around hull plates and phaser banks. After that, another gloss coat was applied, and hull markings applied. These decals did not need the liquid decal film. Panel lines were done with a sludge wash of Euro I Gray, mixed three drops of paint, five drops of water, then two to three drops of dishsoap. When the paint in the lines dry, you can go back with a damp cotton swab to gentle wipe off any paint that hit an area not needing weathering. Then a flat coat was applied, more weathering applied with pastels, then finished up with another coat of flat. The model was then placed on a Round 2 stand. Overall, a very nice resin kit of this cool design! Image: Bottom |
