Leonov

By Richard Kent

The Leonov is the Russian ship used to get to Jupiter in the movie 2010 and although I am not a fan of the 2001/2010 movies (gasp shock horror etc) I did like the design of the Leonov, as in my opinion did the designer of the Omega class destroyer in B5.

I began this model 5 years ago then moved house and packed it away. I then finished it 2 years later but was less than impressed with the paint job and stuffed it in a corner. I decided to repaint it in March this year (2009) as I seem to have got my motivation to model back. The model itself is quite small and thin about 9 inches long and 2 inches at its widest and as I found out after I had bought it very inaccurate.

After all the house move and passage of time I could not find the transfers so I hand painted the name and CCCP, a difficult job I did not do as well as I would have liked. The rest of the paint scheme was a light grey base coat with panels and details picked out in darker grey and then successive grey washes were applied before a final black wash to pick out the details using a mix of enamels and acrylics.
