This is my model of USS Josephus Daniels DE-558, (USN Destroyer Escort) From Turtledove Timeline-191 alternate history novels (Not to be confused with the USS Josephus Daniels CG-27 of our time dimension). It was named for or President Theodore Roosevelt's Secretary of the Navy of the United States during the Great War, Josephus Daniels. The USS Josephus Daniels was a destroyer escort during the Second Great War. In early 1942, she was placed under the command of Lieutenant Sam Carsten. Under his command, she performed many dangerous missions, such as shore bombardment of Confederate held Virginia, landing Marines on Ocracoke Island, delivery of arms to both Irish and Cuban rebels, and patrolling the North Atlantic in an attempt to slow the flow of weapons to the Canadian rebels. Her armament consisted of two turreted 4.5 inch cannon, torpedo tubes, Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft guns, and Browning M2HB .50 caliber machine guns. The Josephus Daniels was 306 feet long, and had a complement of 220 men. The USS Josephus Daniels is most similar to the USN Rudderow class Destroyer Escorts of our time dimension, minus the ASW depth charge racks and mortars. So I used my imagination and the 1/300 Lindberg USS Daniel A. Joy Destroyer Escort Kit with smaller main turreted guns from the spare parts box and photo etch railings (DE-558 also was never laid down in our time dimension). |
Despite his Southern origins, Josephus Daniels served as Secretary of the U. S. instead of Confederate Navy during the Great War and that's why a USN destroyer escort was named after him in the 1941 War. This might be because his father was accidentally killed by Confederate troops during the Civil War, causing some dislocation for his family. |
