Klingon Vor'Cha

By Jesse Rodriguez

This is my model of a Klingon Vor’Cha battle cruiser. I modified it into a more well-armed vessel. I felt that the ship design had more potentialto it than it originally had. I did not like the original placement of the command bridge, disruptor weapon pod and the pod above the heat radiators. I repositioned the disruptor pod over the heat radiators. I placed it there because I felt that it had a better positional layout and it was closer to the power supply. I also repurposed the pod over the radiator into the new forward command structure. I armed it with a new forward photon torpedo launcher and the side boxes could house the phaser bank emitters’. Lastly, I repositioned the bridge and added it to the new forward command structure. I made a newpiece for it to attach to the new forward structure. I also took the artistic liberty of cutting off the section that held the bridge in its original place and make a new section that mimicked the look of the section behind it with the armor plates.

I originally painted the ship with a base coat of a modified olive drab green paint. I then painted several layers of paint washes over the entire ship. I used emerald green, black and black-green alternating layers of paint. This achieved the overall weathered and battle-worn look that I wanted. For the bussard scoops on the engine nacelles, I wanted to achieve a glowing red look. I achieved this by painting a layer of gold as a base then by painting several layers of thinned out red paint over it. As the light passes through the red paint, it reflects back with a hint of gold thus achieving a glowing effect. I used the same technique for the sensor on the disruptor weapon pod. Instead of using gold paint, I used silver paint and I layered the red paint with a little orange to differentiate it from the bussard scoop paint scheme.

Overall, this was a fun project to work on. This is my first time modifying a model kit to this extent. I kept the main space ship frame the same because it was a good design and it would work well for creating variants. I thought of this new design layout as a ship that would be in a new class of heavy battle cruisers.
