USS Enterprise (Second Pilot)

By Greg Kirkman

This is my second build of the original Starship Enterprise 1/1000 scale model from Polar Lights/Round 2. My goal is to build all three versions (first pilot, second pilot, series) while discovering new details about all three versions. The two pilot models have served as practice for my eventual production version build.

This version of the ship was extensively researched (and discussed with other fans) to match every possible detail. The base color is Testors Gull Gray, applied by rattlecan. The highlight areas are Dark Ghost Gray. The dorsal and linear accelerator are a mix of Light Blue and Gull Gray. The engine domes are a mix of Dark Red and Rust. The deflector dish is a mix of Copper and Rust. Although the first and second pilot versions of the ship are very similar at first glance, there are some key changes in terms of the markings and windows. The kit's stock decals do not provide the correct window patterns for the second pilot version--I very carefully mixed and matched window elements from several decal sheets to achieve the accurate look.

Even the most obscure details (like the three windows on the bridge dome and the tiny red/green formation lights on the saucer) have been duplicated. I was also dissatisfied with the stock nacelle endcaps--they feature molded-in holes which represent the painted grilles of the original model. So, I smoothed a set of endcaps, and designed/printed my very first custom decals. I think the results speak for themselves--the nacelle endcaps look much closer to the original model than the stock parts would have If I'd just applied black paint to the molded grilles.

Research indicates that while the weathering on the second pilot incarnation is far more subdued than the first version (no doubt due to repaints which allowed the switch from painted registry markings to decals), some weathering still remains. So, I carefully applied pastel chalks (rusty brown, green, black, and gray) to various spots, as seen in screencaps and rare photos.

This build was a lot of fun, and easier than my first pilot model, which was something of a learning curve. I look forward to using this experience when I begin on my ultimate production-style Enterprise!
