USS Ranger

By Brent Byerly

The Story:

This is the USS Ranger. She is a contemporary of the Daedalus class and is classified as a destroyer/escort. She is named in honor of the British sloop "Ranger". One of the ships that participated in capturing Blackbeard the pirate near Ocracoke Island, NC. in 1718. Until the Earth/Romulan War, she would have spent her life as an escort ship for colonists or as a defensive vessel, assigned to Federation, deep space outposts. I had originally cut out the "saucer" with plans to build a battlestar or some other sort of BSG military vessel but that's as far as it went. I kept seeing her as an old worn out Starfleet ship pressed into duty for a desparate war effort.

The Model:

She's made from wood and finished in acrylic paint. The decals were made using Powerpoint and printed in color on regular office paper. I then cut them out and applied them using stick glue. A few greeblies were added for texture using scrapbook cardstock and saltine box cardboard, painted to match. The nacelles are spools glued together and the rocket engines are mini, dollhouse flowerpots. The deflector dish is a mini bowl. The bussards are made from jewels found in the jewelry making section of our local hobby shop.
